Kim Chee

After having enjoyed some Kim Chee at Simon/Yuie’s a few weekends back, Alex and I have been contemplating where to buy good Kim Chee. Of course it’ll be hard to match that which was made personally by Simon’s mom, but I’m sure there’s gotta be some good varieties out there for us to try. We couldn’t thank Simon/Yuie enough when we walked away from their place with a togo box of Kim Chee to take home. We’re now on the lookout for 2 varieties…. one that is just hot damn good (garlic and all) and a non-garlic variety that won’t scare off half the work population as we breath out that first sigh of… I had the best garlic-marinated Kim Chee last night… and how is your day?

Ok, my co-worker’s mom makes kim chee and sell them. She said her mom just started to sell to folks in her churc. Then everyone loves her kim chee so much - she now makes them every week to sell.
And yes my co-worker and her mom are Korean.
So I can put in orders for you if you want to get some.

I live in a Korean community in Santa Clara so I
have access to all kinds of good Kim Chee but I
don’t know what is best. However, I heard the
best kim chee are made in bath tubs. We have to
find kim chee that were made in bath tubs :) .

Looks like we’re not the only fans of kim chee out there. I miss going to the korean markets off El Camino and Lawrence. Like Rex,I never know exactly which brand to try. I actually had some the other day with my udon at Maruichi (Japanese noodle place) next to my work but again it’s just not the same….only ok by me. Hey Simon… I think some advice is needed here. :-) Maybe we’ll just graze thru the kim chee bar and let our eyes to the shoppin’ as Trucie suggests and have ourselves a kim chee fest afterwards at home. Loanne did your mom make kim chee for you all growing up? Chi, I’ll let you know if we ever uncover Simon’s mom’s secret recipe or find a reasonable knock-off.

Have you gone into a Korean supermarket? There are usually pickled stuff that they lay out like a buffet. What ever you see looks good, you can take how ever much you want. They weigh it by the pounds.
Some good Korean markets are in Sunnyvale/Santa Clara. There 3 that I know of - 1 next to that Korean BBQ Palace off of El Camino & Lawrence (across from the Fish Market). There are 2 more off of El Camino and Lawrence - except on the south side - where that CompUSA.

Let me know when you find good ones. My Mom knows how to make it also - maybe I should just learn. Let me get the recipe or maybe we can just ask Simon for the recipe also.

  8. I love kim chee as well and in general I love most of the pickled dishes most they put out in Korean restaurants. We don’t ever buy them from the grocery stores either I guess since we don’t really know which brands are good…
