Crockpot cooking
I finally got myself a crockpot (the same day Alex decided to upgrade his dingy old coffee maker to an Il Duomo coffee/espresso machine plus coffee grinder). Needless to say, I was excited to make our first meal of stewed beef w/onions, potatoes, and carrots using the crock. But I must’ve put in too much liquid so the beef stew turned out to be more of a soup than a stew… and it didn’t look very appetizing at all. At least I got to use the stock for a noodle dish for the kids, but next time I think I’ll resort to using that crock pot for making chicken soup and things like that instead. Anyone got a “tried and true” recipe for me?

Added on November 20th, 2005 at 1:11 pmYeah…I asked my mom what she normally does with her crockpot, and she said cooking soups too. Loanne’s pho idea sounded tasty… surprised it didn’t taste as yummy though. I guess using hot water to start off with is a good idea. I think for now, I will resort to making chicken soup or even porridge. Will have to experiment with other stuff later.
BTW, I will probably keep this as the family diary. the blog on our homepage will be for more general stuff.

I did use it when I used to make my own baby food for the kids. I used to put in sweet potato and other veggie and cook them for a few hours and then blend them together for the kids to eat. The long time cooking was good and you don’t have to worry about it boiling over etc., but I don’t know of any specific receipe. I think soup is the best.
My Mom gave me a crockpot long time. She used it a lot to make soup (since she can have it cook overnight) and her other herb stuff too. She loves it and that’s why she thinks I should have one

Added on November 16th, 2005 at 7:25 pmWe got a crockpot, oh..7 years ago, was it, for our wedding. I’ve never used it. But I remember it does come with a recipes book. I can look through to see if there are anything interesting.

Added on November 16th, 2005 at 11:08 amSorry - no recipes, but I had a small one where I cooked Matthew’s food in. I also had a big one where I thought cool - I can make Pho, but it didn’t turn out as good as when I did it the normal way. I think the reason behind it is that the water isn’t hot enough. So I’m thinking that when you add water to it initially, make sure you add hot boiling water. Maybe if you have some recipes - I can bring mine out again.
