Absent-Minded Mum

I never thought I’d be capable of pulling “an Alex”, but then again… I never cease to amaze myself. I called in to our pediatrician’s office to make an appointment for Nicholas this morning because he’d been complaining of some pain in his urinary area. They squeezed us in for a 12 noon appt so I quickly picked up Nicholas and headed over to the pediatrician’s office. Upon our arrival, I glanced at the clock in their office and happily breathed a sigh of relief (their clock was a few minute off from mine so I had arrive ON TIME!).
I said to the attendant… “My son has an appt with Dr. X at noon”, and he looked at me and said, “but he’s not even here?” I took it to mean that he was out on lunch, and I thought to myself… why would he be on lunch when he had already ok’d the appt with us, so I responded, “well, I made the appt. about 20 minutes ago”… thinking perhaps there’d be another doctor there to see Nicholas even if our doctor was out.
After placing a call on the phone, the attendant proceeded to give me directions to another location, and it was only then that I recalled Alex’s mention of their office being moved. Dr. X had said that if we made it over quickly, he’d still be able to see us so I asked for the exact address and happily headed over that way with the new address punched into my navigation system.
Little did I know until I got to the new location that there were possibly 15 or more isolated buildings within this address (numbered by alphabet) that I had to search out since the attendant failed to give me the building number for Dr. X’s office. I finally found a directory listing posted outside the window of the local pharmacy and headed over to building C-1/C-2 where Dr. X was supposedly at. I walked into that office and asked the receptionist for help (since the nameplate on the office was not that of Dr. X’s). She was kind enough to help us locate the right building so we were finally on our way (30 minutes past 12).
All this time, Nicholas kept asking why we keep going from one place to the next, and when we finally found the right building N (as in Nicholas), he was so excited that he started running towards the building only to trip on the uneven pathway there. Poor guy… got dragged all over the place (including over to their lab location a couple mile away later for further lab work) and all the while wearing a big smile on his face because he got to leave school in the middle of the day to forge an adventure w/his absent-minded mum. I took him to Eric’s Deli Cafe for lunch afterwards just the two of us, and then dropped him off at school. He collapsed almost immediately on his mat and fell sound asleep.
Oh… and in case you were wondering, Nicholas did get a clean bill of health.

  1. What a day for you, Grace! I know what you meant - our doctors have so many different locations and it’s hard to keep track especially when you are in a hurry or emergency! I remember one time Emily had the nursemaid elbow problem and I had to take both kids to the Urgent Care. I hurried there with Emily screaming in the backseat, and it was a very hot day too. I parked, carried Emily and had Kyle walked with me. Until then I realized I went to the wrong building and it’s another big block down the street!! I was about to cry …
Good to hear Nicholas is OK!
