Wesley’s Tough Day at School
Ever since Wesley’s huge turnaround in behavior at school, things have been pretty smooth all around. He still gets a hiccup here and there, but nothing that really “alarms” the teacher much. Unfortunately, yesterday became one of those days we all dread. Wesley decided not to participate in music practice for the spring program and ended up disrupting the flow for that activity. I think the teachers got really concerned because they fear the possibility of this happening on performance day. Apparently at this school, the teachers are “graded” on how much control they have over their kids, and their Winter/Spring programs are basically their showcase performance of this feat. Now having a wildcard like Wesley of course always complicates the situation so the lead teacher had a long talk with Alex this morning about that issue along with some of the other things that prevailed (an accident at naptime, flicking his yogurt at snacktime, and she said they almost called us at work to come deal with the situation at school). Well, looks like we’ve still got our work cut out for us. It’ll be interesting once the kids switch schools in June to their new campus. I’m curious to see how things might pan out in a different class.

Added on May 17th, 2007 at 4:33 amGrace, that’s the book I was telling you about since Kyle is a spirited kid. You do have to be careful though since not all kids who are energetic or throw tantrums fall into that category. It’s definitely worth reading since you will find techniques in there to handle certain behavior problems.

Added on May 11th, 2007 at 3:19 pmAfter reading, “Raising Your Spirited Child: A Guide for Parents Whose Child Is More Intense, Sensitive, Perceptive, Persistent, Energetic”, I really appreciate and look at Kimberly in a different light. I know you don’t have time to read, but if you get a chance just browse this book and it’ll open up your eyes. I know that I look at all kids differently now.

Added on May 4th, 2007 at 4:47 pmThe same evening when I picked up Wesley from school, I asked the teacher how his progress was after ‘falling off the wagon’ and the lead teacher told me that he did get 1 warning early in the day but after that, he snapped right outta it and turned it into a truly great day. The teachers were very happy of course, and he was even dubbed their “Awesome Possum”.
Whew… I was thinking to myself. I guess all our previous effort did not completely go to waste. I just hope he doesn’t give us these scares too often especially with only 6 more weeks of school left.
