Summer Swim Class (Week 1)

The struggles and triumphs.

I enrolled the kids in a 4-week Monday/Wednesday swim class for the summer, and for this session Nicholas’ teacher is Mr. Tommy. Nicholas seems to be pretty flexible with teachers now so the change every session doesn’t seem to bother him much.

Wesley for this session has 2 teachers (Miss Chelsea and Miss Kaitlyn). On Wesley’s first day of class, he just sat in the water the entire 30 minutes with a big frown upon his face. His primary teacher, Miss Chelsea, came up to him every once in a while to persuade him to do just 1 swim, but nope… Wesley was determined to have things his way. I was out by the pool deck the entire time persuading him to give it a try and in the process got splashed wet a couple of time. Honestly, I could care less about the clothes/hair getting wet, but my leather shoes… oh man. Anyways, after the lesson was over, Wesley was all smiles again and laughing and giggling in the shower area with Nicholas. I knew he was happy to have gotten his way, but I wasn’t going to let him off the hook that easily. So on the way back, I told Wesley that he doesn’t get an after-swim snack because he didn’t swim. I wasn’t too concerned anyway since it was almost 7:30pm and we were already on our way home for dinner. The interesting thing though is that he did not complain at all. As a matter of fact, I told him that the only way he was gonna get anything is if Nicholas decided to share some of his with him which of course Nicholas did. He said thank you to Nicholas as I instructed, and only complained nicely to Nicholas saying “why did you pick the fruit rollup as your snack? Why didn’t you pick the dried fruit as your snack? The bag is bigger and has more food for us to share.” So I reminded Wesley that if he swims next time, he ‘ll get to have his own snack so he made a promise to me then and there that he will swim next time.

We used to have swim lessons at 5:30pm which meant I’d leave work at 4pm on the day of to take them there and work from home afterward, but for this shorter summer session, we tried out the 6:30pm timeslot instead. Poor kids, by the time we get home for dinner, oftentimes it’s almost 7:30pm or later because the drive home usually takes a while too, but I’ll probably switch them back to the 5:30pm slot in the Fall especially since it will get dark earlier too.
