Swim Class III (Week 11)

Nicholas earned an Octopus Ribbon today after successfully completing ‘a glide, followed by a rollover onto his back while kicking, and then a roll back onto his stomach to finish up the move’. It was awesome cuz I got to see him do it on his own, twice.

Wesley did a great job too. For the last couple of weeks, he’s only had one other friend in class so he got lots of individual attention. Wesley did cry a bit though in today’s class because he got a little scared doing the rolls from front to back. Since it took Nicholas 24 plus weeks to perfect that move, I don’t expect it to be any easier for Wesley either.  Poor guy… I guess today was not one of those try-something-new kind of days for him.

I on the other hand learned how to swim from one end to the next during high school. I had a near drowning incident so that scared me. Grace, you are right - swimming is one thing I really want the kids to learn. Anything else is not as important. And of course I have a pool, but still every kid should learn how to swim. It’s great to see their progress. :) Way to go Boys!

I guess the roll from front-to-back etc. is a survival technique they conjured up for this stage of learning which i thought was so tough because I’m not even sure if I can do it myself, so I really applaud them for the effort. Swimming is one of the few things I really wanted our kids to learn, and I’m just so excited to see their progress every single week. As for swimming in high school, I was excused form the activity because I was on crutches during those weeks — what a way to avoid getting a bad grade huh?

Roll from front to back? Knowing how to float is not enough? :) . I have to say, of all the sports I didn’t know how to play, not knowing how to swim got me a B in high school. It was embarassing to be in the small pool learning how to swim while the rest was swimming in the big pool.

Congrats to the kids. Kids learn so much now adays.
