Hot Lunch

So we finally broke down and decided to subsidize Nicholas’ daily lunch routine with hot lunches from school. We were running out of quick lunch prep ideas and with our time at home cut short by homework checking, reading practice, spelling practice, cooking, cleaning, laundry, among other things, we decided to just make our lives a little easier by letting him have 2-3 hot meals a week… not every day of the week just yet. Nicholas looks forward to this very much now, and safely guards his lunch coupons in fear of loosing it (especially on a pizza lunch day). Unfortunately Wesley does not get the benefit of hot lunches just yet as they only serve to Kindergarteners and up. The food is provided by Nob Hill catering and each kid gets a choice between four meals each day (specified at order time 2 months ahead) and Nicholas seems to enjoy it so far. Tomorrow, I ordered him the Chinese Chicken Salad. He’s not much of a salad eater, but this is my attempt at letting him try something different than what he’s used to. :-)

I am surprised you haven’t done it yet! ;) Actually I think it’s good for the kids to have hot lunch from school every once in a while - it’s a priviledge and they will feel special about it. However, doing it everyday will not be so different anymore. I started letting Kyle have that at the later part of the school last year and he LOVED it. It gave him something to look forward to every week and the best thing was, he did finish his lunch (well, I purposely picked the one that he liked since I’d rather knowing that he would eat than guessing whether he would like the things I picked for him or not. If I want him to try something new, I’d rather do that at home than at school)! This year, I started letting him have hot lunch once and now twice a week. Again, he likes it and has been eating 2 pieces of pizza every time! He told me he liked the spagetti and meatballs so now he gets that too. It gives them a sense of power and choice!
