Excited About Reading

Wesley is very excited about going to school these days because he is starting to read the school’s “big books” now. Since the beginning of the school year, he has been bringing home little readers each time he finishes reading one at school, and now he has finally moved on to the more difficult readers which of course he cannot take home to keep. Instead, they have him bring home a flyer with sample text from the book he has completed. Nowadays, he would read things off of packaging and just about anything else he could get his hands on. Last week, I was watching the Les Miserables Concert on DVD and when I turned it off, he asked if he could continue watching “the dream cast” on TV. I saw that the DVD cover shows “Les Miserables: the dream cast” and the Les Miserables was in some strange font that’s uneasy to recognize so he thought the DVD was called “the dream cast”.
Also, when the kids have earned their movie for the day on weekends, he would ask to watch either the school’s phonics DVD or one of our Leapfrog Learning DVD’s. I’m guessing it’s only a passing phase since the novelty of this reading discovering will eventually wear off, but it’s been very exciting for us though to see this amount of enthusiasm in him… I only wish it would last forever.
