Car Collision
I’ve never been involved in a head-on/side collision before, but this was an interesting first. We were at a standstill on a 4-lane road waiting to make a left turn when we saw a Ford Expedition crash into a Honda-like vehicle from behind pushing the car 10-15 feet forward straight into our car. It’s the wierdest feeling seeing the 1st part of the accident and seeing the car skid into you knowing full well that it’s gonna hit. The impact came from the front left side so Alex’s driver side took the biggest hit. Alex leaned over towards me a bit as he and I braced for impact. I saw a swooosh of smoke come up from the hood of the Japanese car with all three cars smashed together in the middle of the road. I was feeling ok, but my immediate thought was picking up the kids. I’ve been late to pick up the kids before, and the look of disappointment I see in their face that we “forgot to pick them up” is certainly a sad sight. So I grabbed my purse quickly, the kid’s visor cards (ID for pickup), and made a dash for the school (luckily, this time the distance I had to walk was very short). From a bystander’s point of view however, I was basically fleeing the scene of an accident so that must’ve looked kinda strange. There was a very nice man that came immediately to everyone’s aid and he offered to be a witness for the accident. The Expedition ended up on top of the other car’s trunk, and a kid (maybe 8-10 year old) in the small car was sent to the hospital in an ambulance because he had complained of back pains. By the time I picked up the kids and returned to the scene of the accident, there were 5 police cars there, an ambulance and apparently two firetrucks (one of which had left by the time I returned). There were tons of spectators there as we waited for Julia to come pick us up. Alex actually managed to drive our car home later on, but regretted that decision because he had a difficult time getting the car to make right turns. Anyways, I’m just thankful that the accident was not more serious and that our kids were not in the car when it happened. Alex told me later that the passengers of the large SUV were both teenage boys probably no older that 16, and that the kids were probably distracted and didn’t pay attention to the Honda vehicle parked in the middle of the street waiting to make a left turn opposite from us.

The way you described the accident reminded me of, just a few weeks ago, when Nathan and I was on one of the downtown san jose streets. For some reason, the street was in a “S” shape, where the middle of the “S” was the intersection. We were stopped at the red light, but it was green for the cars coming from the other direction (on-coming traffic). So when the other car was driving towards us, Nathan let out a yell because it looked like the car was going to drive head-on into us. It scared me the first time I was on that road too. Just imagine if the driver was not careful with the curvy road.
People should really pay attention when they drive. Not only is their life at risk, but others as well.

Added on November 9th, 2006 at 3:42 amI’m so glad that everyone is okay and especially the kids weren’t in the car. You described it so well, that it freaked me out also. The only accident I’ve been in is that someone reared ended me and sent me flying into the middle of the road - luckily there were no traffic at that time. I was probably only 17-18 years old. I didn’t know what to do at all. I just quickly backed up to get out of the way, then I got out of the car and went back to see if the other person was okay. I just rememberd how white his face was. I bet Alex & yours must be like that at that moment. My mom was in the car with me. Something like this makes you think - you can always be careful, but it’s the other people on the road.
You were in your SUV right? Funny thing is that Wayne just mentioned to me (we were talking about cars) that Alex wanted to keep it until the kids can drive and that it would be their’s. I hope the car can be fixed for Alex.
