Homework and Tests
I have been warned that certain private schools have a knack for putting both the parents and kids to work! And I am experiencing it for the first time this school year. Kindergarten for Nicholas wasn’t too bad only because there’s at most 2 pieces of homework paper a day along with some light reading assignments to be done except under special circumstances of course: Speech Contest, Spelling Contest, etc., but 1st grade seems to be a whole ‘nother ballgame it seems at Nicholas’ school.
Actually, I think this just takes some getting used to but I am already dreading the day when both kids have homework to bring home! Now is that a terrible thing for a parent to say? I guess what I’m getting at is… for the amount of money we pay for private schooling, doesn’t that entitle us parents to have some kickbacks in effort? Perhaps this is just bad thinking on my part to assume this, but I feel like I’m doing double shift work duty as full-time employee plus part-time teacher at nights (both in school and in music). Well, I guess I’m bound to complain regardless of circumstance so to be fair I will admit that I am equally impressed by the kind of progress I’ve seen in both kids as well.
Here’s an example of Nicholas’ homework week:
2 pages of math facts for homework each day (usually completed in extended care). Math test on Friday.
1 phonics sheet for review (to be completed front-and-back)
5 complete spelling sentences written up each day for the words of the day with subject circled and verbs underlined. Spelling test on Friday.
4-5 pages of almost full page reading assignments in preparation for book report(done in class) and test on Thursdays.
Memorize vocabulary words given out on Mondays and their definitions for vocabulary test on Wednesdays. So far, there’s been only 4 for the week so that’s good.
Memorize Poem selection for the week to recite in front of class on Friday. Students are graded on Posture, Volume, Poise, Clarity, and Presence (Eye Contact with Audience).
Other Misc. Tests based on various subjects learned in class (e.g. Geography, Science, etc) on Thursdays which varies from week to week.
There’s book reports and practice compositions they do in class that isn’t required for homework until next year, but this gave me a glimpse at what else to expect when he enters 2nd/3rd grade.

Good luck with your double homework load! I can’t imagine how your schedule’s like these days too. I spend so much 1-on-1 time with Nicholas on his school stuff that Wesley complains that it’s not fair Nicholas has homework when he does not so I’m going to start packing homework sheets for Wesley too for our car rides so that he won’t feel left out.

Added on September 26th, 2007 at 10:39 pmwow Sandra, that’s a lot of stuff Kyle has on top of extracurricular activities. I decided not to sign Nicholas up for extracurricular activities this year because I need all the homework help I can get from extended care. Also, I’m kinda bummed that TGA is not coming to our campus this year unless I’m mistaken… haven’t seen any signup flyers from them yet.
As for homework help, I think Nicholas’ teacher only guides the kids on the math homework because it is the same for the combined class of 1st graders. Their reading assignment/phonic assignments vary from class to class so he doesn’t usually do that at school. I’m sure Nicholas will be able to take some of the homework responsibility off my shoulders eventually (I’m hoping) but in the meantime I’m trying to help him manage his homework content so he doesn’t fail any tests. He’s done really well on most of his test, but he failed a math test (69%) last week due to general carelessness on his part.

The good news is they are learning a lot!!! If they can handle it and if they still have other extracurricular activities to go with it, it is actually good for them.

At least Nicholas is not complaining so that’s a good sign. The homework and tests things are inevitable in private school. However, even if kids go to public school, nowadays parents will supplement them with other things anyway …
Hey, I have 2 now having to do homework everyday and spelling tests and poems on Fridays and not to say Kyle has lots more other tests (Math, Phonics, Science, History, Spanish) during the week!! And they are still doing other activities after school!!! Kyle needed to have his first book report (of a book with 100+ pages) picked out the second week of school and a draft done by next week!!!
Like I said, it is just going to get worse so we parents have to be prepared for it! I know this Mom who has 3 boys in Stratford elementary school so you can imagine how her schedule is like everyday!!!
My question is, do your kids go to extended care? If so, they should have finished all their homework there??

Added on September 20th, 2007 at 4:16 pmI guess that’s my biggest complaint. That by the time we get home, most of our time together as a family is spent on homework/practice/etc with no time left for fun. Actually, Nicholas hasn’t complained about school one bit because he thinks he’s just doing what every other 1st grader does in this world. It’s only me who’s been complaining about my added workload even though I know it’s all supposed to be worthwhile in the whole scheme of things. Terrible huh? :-O

Added on September 20th, 2007 at 5:02 amOh my - where’s fun time? Grace, good luck! I think the kids will do fine. At their age I don’t think they know any better. To them doing all that is just normal and they will be able to handle it.
